Curry chicken salad on house salad, in a large, fresh tomato, in a wrap, or on a sandwich. A special recipe of curry chicken made with all breast meat, cashews, pistachios, some crispy veggies, and a flavorful curry seasoning can be added to our house salad, placed in a cored fresh tomato, put in a wrap, or placed on our fresh bread. Dr. Suess’ immortal The Cat in the Hat (our favorite fight the rainy day book) opens with these wonderful lines, “The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house all that cold, cold, wet day. I sat there with Sally. We sat there, we two. And I said, ‘How I wish We had something to do!'” Do something more than “Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!” Drop by our house for a bump that will help you jump, get rid of the grump, and not feel like a chump — you’ll feel positively plummy (whatever that is). Yes, our chicken salad can do that in our Trump-Twitter-dump and Hillary-spillary free zone. And, yes, the Cat in the Hat will be chatting and wrapping and sandwiching with Thing 1 and Thing 2 and his thingamabobbydoditcherydo.

Shrimptastic Friday: Barbecued shrimp stuffed po-boys or fried green tomato and shrimp po-boys with house-made remoulade sauce. Take a half-size po-boy, hollow the bread to make a bread cave, stuff it with our own New Orleans style barbecued shrimp (prepped in loads of butter, white wine, and saucy spices), cover it with barbecue sauce, and grab the napkins. Or grab our fried green tomatoes, add some shrimp sautéed in our barbecue sauce, our house salad with house-made dressing, some remoulade sauce, and you’ve got a little more than a po-boy, you’ve got a “Whoa-boy.” Yep. The wildly successful and legendary movie Animal House was released this week way back in 1978. No food fights, old caddy’s dressed as a tank, or togas, here, though — just some great shrimp po-boys. “Po-boy, po-boy, po-by,” Blutarsky began chanting. “I guess we’re having a po-boy party,” Otter (played by Tim Matheson) smiled.

Secretary of the Agriculture Tom Vilsak says, “I don’t care what anybody says: Nothing is better than a tomato you grow. There’s something about it that’s different than a tomato you can buy. It’s a great thing.” Hey, fresh tomatoes are totally great things, but maybe putting them in tomato pie is even greater.

Chicken, shrimp, and andouille sausage jambalaya. Well, Cajun calling! What’s better than a delicious, hearty mix of chicken, shrimp, andouille sausage, rice, and tasty goodies? Comedian Brian Regan jokes, “I went to the juice isle, I learned something. Cranberries are taking over everything. What do you got, apples? Put some cranberrise in there, make it 50/50. Cran-apple. Fried pork chops with gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, and sautéed cabbage and kale. Blissfully slumbering overnight in a special saucy boudoir of buttermilk and seasonings, these pork chops will ceremoniously swim with their special flour bathing suits in a big pot of hot and lovely grease, and they come served with a lovely dish of mashed sweet potatoes sided by some wonderfully healthy sautéed cabbage and kale. After Franklin D. Roosevelt’s nebulous message to 1940 convention delegates who wondered about a possible FDR third term, “[…you] are free to vote for any candidate,” the famous “voice from the sewers” boomed over the loud speakers, “Illinois wants Roosevelt!” The convention erupted into “We Want Roosevelt! We Want Roosevelt!” thanks to Thomas Garry, superintendent of Chicago’s Department of Sanitation. Of course, FDR won an unprecedented third term as president. Yep. History. House-made hamburgers on jalapeño buns with all the trimmings. Well, what’s better than home-made hamburgers, jalapeño buns, lots of trimmings? Nothing. Bastille Day makes us think of our old friend Inspector Clouseau, played by Steve Martin in the new incarnation of The Pink Panther. Inspector Clouseau plans to chase the thief to the United States, so he must brush up his English. He works on his flawless American accent by practicing saying, “I would like to buy a hamburger.” Yeah. Well, come join us for these burgers, they’ll help you feel revolutionarily revolutionary, and you don’t even have to practice your French to get something that has German origins.

Shrimp carbonara pasta ($15.00). We have bowtie pasta swimming in a creamy white sauce with lots of fine friends — gulf-caught shrimp, mushrooms, garden fresh veggies, and green onions. We’re feeling kind of Les Miserables today, you know, day after Bastille Day and all. “I dreamed a dream of shrimp,” Fantine sang so soulfully. Not to be outdone, Valjean belts out, “Who am I? I’m Shrimp Valjean!” Watch out for the master of the shrimp, though, he’s naughty, “Master of the shrimp, doling out the charm, ready with some pasta and an open palm. Tells a saucy tale, makes a little stir, customers appreciate a bon-viveur….” What would Friday be without, “Do you hear the people sing? Singing a song of shrimp pasta? It is the music of a people who will not hunger again! When the beating of your heart echoes the grumbling of your tumms, there is a life about to start, when the pasta comes!” Yep. Chicken cacciatore. Lightly floured chicken breast pan-fried in butter with a crushed plum tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, and fresh red peppers sauce served on a bed of creamy polenta. It’s an old dish: cacciatore means “hunter” in Italian, and it’s simply prepared with fresh ingredients, including the latest bird hunted, e.g. dove, pheasant, or if you’re particularly adventuresome, yardbird. We hunted our chickens down the bayou, lassoed them from the backs of our domesticated buffaloes, sent them to their heavenly reward in a very humane way, and have lovingly prepared them just for you. Come on by, you won’t want to miss these “hunted” chickens.

Chicken and sausage jambalaya. Well, Cajun calling! What’s better than a delicious, hearty mix of chicken, sausage, rice, and tasty goodies? Wonder Kid wanders into Superchicken’s secret room one day only to find our squab super hero dressed, well, a little oddly. Superchicken, it seems, is a karaoke crooner, and he loves the mic, the music, the mod of singing. Yep, it’s his alter ego, Elvis Diamond, replete with big hair, side burns, and a sequined denim suit á la Elvis and Hot August Night. He sings all the great ones, “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Song Sung Blue,” and “Red, Red Wine.” Of course his favorites are “Jailhouse Rock” because he likes that “jailbird sing” bit, “Houndog,” and “I Am…I Said.”  When he’s feeling silly, he’ll sing, “You ain’t nothing but a sausage, frying all the time, you ain’t nothing but fat, and you ain’t no friend of mine.” Yep, the secret world of Superchicken, it’s a strange place as our little friend Wonder Kid discovered. Come join us for some jambalaya, Elvis Diamond will be singing his redone tune about jambalaya, “Love on the Rice.”

Shrimptastic Friday: Barbecued shrimp stuffed po-boys or fried green tomato and shrimp po-boys with house-made remoulade sauce. Take a half-size po-boy, hollow the bread to make a bread cave, stuff it with our own New Orleans style barbecued shrimp (prepped in loads of butter, white wine, and saucy spices), cover it with barbecue sauce, and grab the napkins. Or grab our fried green tomatoes, add some shrimp sautéed in our barbecue sauce, our house salad with house-made dressing, some remoulade sauce, and you’ve got a little more than a po-boy, you’ve got a “Whoa-boy.” Speaking of “jingle-jangle,” what most might not know about The Byrds’ tune “Mr. Tambourine Man” is that Bob Dylan wrote it. He didn’t make it into the recording studio quite fast enough to beat The Byrds’ rendition to song street. Good news, though, it’s his only number one hit song. Though he had many top albums and a few songs that made number two on the Billboard charts, he never had any number ones. Crazy. Stop by for our number one hit this Friday, and you’ll feel like you’re “Knock, knock, knockin’ on heaven’s door,” but in a really good way.

Tuesday, June 21

Chicken and dumplings. These dumplings come seeded with herbs in a house-made stock and cream sauce, and there’s no more elegant way to head into the weekend than with a sumptuous dish of house-made chicken and dumplings. The longest day of the year, or what we call the summer solstice, happened yesterday. It means summer is officially here — as if we didn’t know it by the heat. Well, come beat the heat and enjoy those longer days with a little of our chicken and dumplings.

Pulled pork tacos, Spanish rice, beans, cilantro lime slaw, and fresh salsa. Our pulled pork chopped and served on lightly fried corn tortillas with Spanish rice, beans, lime cilantro slaw, and fresh salsa will redefine “getting over hump day” for you. Famous chef James Beard admits, “If I had to narrow my choice of meats down to one for the rest of my life, I am quite certain that meat would be pork.” Well said, Brother Beard. Nothing like pork to make our lives a little better.

Chicken and sausage jambalaya. Well, Cajun calling! What’s better than a delicious, hearty mix of chicken, sausage, rice, and tasty goodies? Well, this week many years ago in 1788, the U.S. Constitution was ratified with New Hampshire becoming the ninth state to ratify what has become the longest-living written constitution in the world. Do we know how those delegates worked so feverishly and so well? Chicken and sausage jambalaya for all (with a little bit of wine thrown in for good measure). President George Washington even said, “Thanks to the chicken and sausage jambalaya, the Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon. Pass me some more, please, Mr. Adams.” Yep. Who knew?

We think the song ought to be “Hey Mr. Po-boy man, save a shrimp for me…in the jingle jangle Friday I’ll come following you.” Yeah, you, too, can sing “Hey Mr. Po-boy Man” this Friday — come join us at the table, we’d love to see you.
