Hey friends, try the fried green BLT: it comes with fried green tomatoes and bacon and a mix of romaine and red leaf lettuce, tomatoes, and purple onions with our house dressing on our toasted fresh bread. Our old friend Winston Churchill observed, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” And, he didn’t live in the 24/7 news cycle twitterverse of craziness.

We’ll have a creamy spinach and artichoke soup and our own house-made shrimp salad available for you this week!

Thursday, September 7, 2017

Stuffed pork chops on a bed of sautéed mirliton squash. These pork chops come stuffed with a delicious mix of seasoned rice, andouille sausage, mushrooms, seasonings, and just a little mozzarella cheese. Well, ‘Here’s a husband who forgot that love conquers the world: A husband was in big trouble when he forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife told him “Tomorrow there better be something in the driveway for me that goes zero to 200 in 2 seconds flat.” The next morning the wife found a small package in the driveway. She opened it and found a brand-new bathroom scale.

Funeral arrangements for the husband have been set for Saturday.’ These pork chops won’t help you remember everything, just some of the most important things. Yep.

Fried chicken thighs, cauliflower mash, savory-sweet green beans, house salad, and a biscuit. Chicken thighs bedded overnight in buttermilk and hot sauce come fried in a special flour recipe and served with roasted cauliflower mash, savory sweet green beans, and flaky honey buttermilk biscuits — good home-cooking at its best. Well, it seems a devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences out on the range. Three weeks later, a chicken walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn’t believe his eyes. He took the precious book out of the chicken’s mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, “It’s a miracle!” “Not really,” said the chicken. “Your name is written inside the cover.”

We’ll have creamy spinach and artichoke soup available all week!

Sandwich & Wrap Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Sandwiches and wraps Wednesdays! We’ll have all our sandwiches and wraps available for lunch on Wednesdays. Try our very own pimento cheese and bacon, it’s like a grilled cheese amped up for excitement and ready to roll. Hubert Humphrey admitted, “My favorite sandwich is peanut butter, baloney, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and mayonnaise on toasted bread with catsup on the side.” Hmm, that’s interesting.

Crab cakes and house salad ($15). A luscious mix of lump crab meat, Stone House Eats Bread crumbs, and seasonings covered with a delightful beurre blanc sauce and served with our own bread and a house salad. When a daydreaming taxi driver accidentally drove past his destination, his passenger gently tapped him on the shoulder from the back seat. Startled, the driver went through a red light and almost hit a bus before he pulled over. As he tried to catch his breath, the passenger said, “I’m sorry I gave you a jolt—it was my fault.” “No, it was mine,” the driver said. “This is my first day driving a cab. For the past 25 years, I drove a hearse.” Whoops!

Lemon chicken quarters with savory rice and sautéed zucchini. Our specially seasoned and carefully roasted chicken quarters come served atop savory rice and sautéed garden-fresh zucchini. Way back in 1920, a young boy named Christopher was born to loving parents A.A. and Daphne on August 21. On his first birthday, he received a stuffed bear — and many other stuffed animals found themselves added to the toy zoo over Christopher’s early years. Using the stuffed animals and his son as inspiration, the dad published a book of verse for his young son in 1924 called When We Were Very Young. You’ve probably guessed that the young son was Christopher Robin Milne, the son of A.A. Milne, who penned all our favorite Winnie-the-Pooh bear stories. Well, Pooh-Bear might not like the lemon chicken, as he prefers honey, but Tigger will bound into town because he loves chicken. Better hurry and get here before the Heffalumps, you know what frightful eaters they are.

We’ll have a house-made potato soup and shrimp salad available all week!

Sandwich & Wrap Wednesday, August 23, 2017

Sandwiches and wraps Wednesdays! We’ll have all our sandwiches and wraps available for lunch on Wednesdays. Try our very own version of the muffuletta made with our own bread and olive spread — then we add genoa salami, hard salami, smoked ham, swiss cheese, and hogs head cheese (it’s so much more fun than the traditional bologna). It’s hard to believe it’s been thirty years since Baby and Johnny dirty danced their way into our lives. Yep. Dirty Dancing premiered this week in 1987. Makes us feel, well, old. We were very young then, but we’re thinking that famous line needs a little food update, using our muffuletta: “Nobody puts Muffa in a corner.” Come grab a muffuletta and a dance — Johnny, Baby, and the whole crew will be dancing on the tables.

Thursday, August 24, 2017

Spaghetti with fresh marinara sauce, house-made meatballs, and house salad and bread. Yes, it’s the old stand-by, but ours contains a fresh and homemade marinara sauce and a 1/3 pound hand-patted meatball served over piping hot pasta, and it’s just the right kind of pastalicious serving that makes life a little better. Popular pasta history has spaghetti coming from Sicily, but some folks argue that Marco Polo brought something like pasta from China, and introduced it to the region. Yet, we know that some kind of pasta made from durum wheat was eaten during Roman times. So, what’s the true history of spaghetti? Well, it’s stranger than you might think. Apparently, in 1154 (about a century before Marco Polo) King Roger II of Sicily commissioned a geographical survey of Sicily from his court geographer and chronicler, Abu Abdullah Mohammed al Edrisi (yes, that’s his real name). Not much of the manuscript’s maps and illustrations survive today, but we do have some interesting scientific, culinary, and cultural information available from the aptly titled The Book of Roger (yes, that’s its real name). Edrisi tells of a town in Sicily called Trabia where the residents make long strands of pasta (which they called “little worms” or “vermicelli”) from hard wheat for both eating and exporting. Believe it or not, for information like that, the book was considered one of the most important scientific works of the Middle Ages, even though it contained some pretty revolutionary claims like “the earth is round like a sphere.” Strange spaghetti, but true. Come help us celebrate spaghetti and heliocentric theory. Copernicus and Edrisi will be here, they love the huge meatballs.

Created in 1906 by Salvatore Lupo, owner of Central Grocery on Decatur Street in New Orleans, the muffuletta quickly became a hugely popular sandwich. Lupo started with a traditional Sicilian round bread, then added olive salad and mortadella (similar to bologna), salami, ham, mozzarella, and provolone to make a little bit of sandwich history.
